Parasomnia Sleeping Disorder
Introduction:
Parasomnia is a sleep disorder that causes unnatural and unpleasant physical occurrences or experiences that keep you awake at night. If you suffer from parasomnia, you might act strangely, move abnormally, talk abnormally, or express your emotions in odd ways. Even though you could appear to be awake to your bedmate, you are asleep. According to the sleep period during which they occur, insomnias are classified. Non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM) sleep and REM, or rapid eye movement, sleep are the two primary stages of sleep. Other parasomnias are included in the “other” category.
Non-REM sleep parasomnia consists of the following:
- Those who suffer from terror sleep conditions awaken suddenly and in a scared mood. You might shout or sob in terror. A sleep terror typically lasts around thirty seconds, although it might last for a while.
- Somnambulism, often known as sleepwalking, is moving around while still asleep while getting out of bed. You might mumble or babble as you sleep.
- Confusional arousals: People who suffer from this sleep disorder appear to be partially awake but are confused and disoriented in both time and space. Your eyes may be open, you may sit up in bed, and you may weep.
- Eating and drinking while half awake is a symptom of a sleep problem known as an eating-related eating disorder. You might consume meals that you wouldn’t normally eat while awake.
Throughout REM slumber, parasomnia:
- Vivid dreams that evoke dread, panic, and worry are called nightmares. You might sense that your safety or survival is in danger. You could explain your dream in great detail if you were awakened in the middle of a nightmare.
- You cannot move your body or limbs while asleep if you have recurrent isolated sleep paralysis. According to scientists, prolonging REM sleep, a period of rest where muscles are already relaxed, maybe the source of the paralysis.
- REM sleep behavior disorder (RSBD) is a sleep disorder in which, in response to a violent dream, you act out, vocalize (e.g., talk, swear, laugh, shout), or take aggressive actions (e.g., punch, kick, or grab).
Among other parasomnias:
- Exploding head disorder: If you suffer from this sleep condition, you may experience loud noises or an explosive crashing sound as you drift off to sleep or awaken. A quick muscle cramp or an imagined flash of light are some possible symptoms.
- Enuresis during sleeping: This does not correspond to the urinary tract infections that young children experience. This bedwetting must affect children five years old and older and occur at least twice a week for at least three months to qualify as parasomnia.
- Nighttime hallucinations: If you’re suffering from this type of sleep disorder, you may wake up or fall asleep with hallucinations. You might perceive motion, hear sounds, feel sensations, or see things that aren’t there. You might get out of bed to avoid what you’re going through.
- Groans associated with sleep: You experience recurring periods of loud groaning during sleep (long groans accompanied by sighing or grunts).
- Sexsomnia: People who have this sleep disorder engage in sexual activity when they are asleep. Intercourse, libido sexual assault, cuddling your bedmate, and sexual utterances are a few examples.
